Polyurethane basics

Polyurethane applictions

The polyurethane industry is a part of the plastics industry and deals exclusively with the production and processing of urethanes, called in English Polyurethanes and abbreviated PU and known in German under the abbreviation PUR.
From this, for example, foams can be produced that are in many everyday things such as the modern soft foam mattress, the car seat and the steering wheel, the shoe sole or the building insulation.

Manufacturing

Polyurethane basically consists of two types of raw materials (polyol and isocyanate), liquids derived from petroleum. Mixing the two system components containing different adjuvants results in a reactive mixture.

The special feature of this type of plastic is that, in contrast to thermoplastics, it remains dimensionally stable when the temperature rises and thus can not be deformed. In the production of polyurethane products, the polymer-producing polymer reaction takes place in a form designed for it, which at the same time determines the product shape and properties. Since the polymer reaction is mostly accompanied by a foaming reaction, there are exceptionally many possibilities for shaping the final properties of the foam, and it is precisely this diversity that characterizes this type of plastic.
